The castle Grimmenstein is a partially restored hill fort in southern Lower Austria .

geography

The castle is located in the Pittental on the southeast slope of the Kulmriegels in the market town of Grimmenstein at an altitude of 660  m above sea level. A. and about 100 meters below the Kulmriegel summit on a rock. It is one of three former weir systems on the Kulmriegel, which dominates the Pittental. Like the other two weir systems, it was left to decay due to the roof tax and largely removed as building material. In the 1960s, it was repaired and partially rebuilt in the neo-romantic style using the walls that were still in ruins. After a further dilapidation, the new owner Markus Albero Grimmenstein has been restoring the facility 90% on his own since July 2014 without public funds / subsidies and has been making it accessible to the public since April 2016.

Surname

It has sometimes been incorrectly called Burg Vordergrimmenstein since the 19th century , while the former castle on the summit of 758  m above sea level. A. high Kulmriegels were incorrectly referred to as Hochgrimmenstein Castle and a former castle southwest of the Kulmriegels at the end of the Kunzgraben as Hintergrimmenstein . These designations can not be found in any old documents, but rather the names Grimmenstein. "Vordergrimmenstein", Windberg, is wrong here, "Hochgrimmenstein" is wrong here, Künberg, and "Hintergrimmenstein" is wrong here.
