history

Hitoyoshi Castle (explanations in text)

Hitoyoshi Castle was built as a hilltop castle on the left bank of the Kuma River ( 球磨 川 , Kumagawa ) and at the mouth of the Mune River ( als , Munegawa ). Sagara Nagayori ( 相 良 長 頼 ) from the large landowner family Sagara, who have lived there since the Kamakura period , is said to have built the Brug. It is safer to renovate or build the castle by von Sagara Tametsugu ( 相 良 為 続 ; 1447–1500) in the Sengoku period around 1470. In 1589 Tametsugu's son Nagatsune ( 相 良 長 毎 ; 1469–1518) brought stonemasons from the province of Bungo and had the castle expanded.

After the Battle of Sekigahara , the Sagara were on the losing side but had advocates and were able to hold their property. The castle was expanded further from 1601, and in 1639 the areas of Hommaru ( 本 丸 ; "1" in the figure) were at the highest point, Ni-no-maru ( 二 ノ 丸 ; "2") on the west side, the San-no -maru ( 三 ノ 丸 ; "3"), gates and watchtowers as well as the moat south of the residence completed. The central areas were protected in the south by the mountain ridge, in the north walls protect the castle. While the older part of the castle was built on a hill, the extensions took place on the plain. So finally the residence ("4") found place there, and in the west upstream area "5" the higher samurai in ("5") Iyashiki kuruwa ( 居屋 敷 曲 輪 ). There was also "6" the main gate ( 大 手 門 , ōte-mon ) to the castle. "K" is the Kuma flowing from right to left, there was "7" the "water gate" ( 水手 門 , Mizu-no-te-mon ). The stone wall there has the shape of the "Samurai Rejection" ( 武 者 返 し , musha-kaeshi ) through the protruding top wall section. "M" is the Mune River.

In February 1862 the residence and other buildings were lost in a fire. The samurai's neighborhood also suffered great damage. The castle was also fought over and devastated during the Satsuma rebellion .

The Hitoyoshi History Museum of the Sagara family ( 人 吉 城 歴 史館 , Hitoyoshi rekishi-kan ) is located in the foreground .
