The castle Kanayama ( Japanese 金山城 , Kanayama-jō ) is located in the city of Ōta in the prefecture Gumma .
history
The Nitta built a castle on Mount Kanayama . From here, Nitta Yoshisada ( 新 田義貞 ; 1303–1338) and his troops set out to support Emperor Go-Daigo . After the direct line of the Nitta died out in 1410, the castle was used by the Yura ( 由 良 氏 ), a branch line.
In 1553 Nagao Kagetora made himself lord of the castle, but in 1566 Takeda Shingen took the castle from him, who lost it to Hōjō Ujimasa in 1588 . When Tokugawa Ieyasu became Shogun, he did not want a daimyo there: Kanayama was placed directly under the Shogunate.
After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, a Shinto shrine for the Nitta was built on the castle grounds to commemorate their commitment to the rightful emperor.
