The Castle of Rastenburg was a Teutonic castle of the Teutonic Order in the then East Prussian town of Rastenburg, now Kętrzyn .

history

Before the time of the Teutonic Order, there was already a refugee and rest castle on site, which the order took over. After this castle was destroyed by enemy Lithuanians, it was rebuilt from 1345 to 1348 in stone on a rectangular floor plan. In 1410 the castle fell to Poland, but returned to the order after a year. During the Thirteen Years' War it again came into Polish possession. In the Duchy of Prussia, the castle was handed over to a burgrave to manage it and was rebuilt for this purpose from 1528 to 1566. On December 15, 1797, the castle was destroyed by fire. In 1912 the city of Rastenburg bought the vacant building and furnished apartments. The castle was renovated in the 1930s and used as a tax office and as an air raid shelter in the 1940s. In World War II heavily damaged, the castle was built faithfully from 1964 to 1966 again.
