Saga Castle is located in the Saga Plain in a triangle formed by the Tafuse-gawa ( 多布施川 ), a tributary of the Takase-gawa ( 高 瀬 川 ), and the Hattae ( 八 田 江 ). First Ryūzōji Masaie (1556-1607) built a castle called Nakamura in 1595, which was then taken over in 1602 by the caretaker of the Ryūzōji, Nabeshima Naoshige ( 鍋 島 直 茂 ; 1538-1618). After the Ryūzōji died out in 1607, his son, Nabeshima Katsushige ( 鍋 島 勝 成 ; 1580–1657) was the first daimyo of the Nabeshima.

In 1611 the castle was completed by expanding the innermost district (hommaru), and the family took up residence there. From 1614 to 1615 the outer castle area was expanded. The building material came from castles that were demolished after the order "Only one castle per province" ( 一 国 一 城 令 , Ikkoku ichijō rei ). In 1726 the castle tower, the buildings in Hommaru and in Ni-no-maru and San-no-maru were lost in a fire. Hommaru and Ni-no-maru were rebuilt, but the castle tower and the San-no-maru were abandoned.

At the beginning of the Meiji period , the castle buildings were demolished and the eastern moat and the moat around the inner castle were filled in. Only the gate to the inner castle, the Shachi-mon ( 鯱 門 ), so named after the two Shachi, the dolphin-like creatures at the gable ends, remained. In recent years, the residence has been partially rebuilt according to the original, it serves as the prefecture museum on the history of the castle ( 佐賀 県 立 佐賀 城 本 丸 歴 史 博物館 , Saga kenritsu Saga-jō hommaru rekishi hakubutsukan ).

The other castle grounds contain the prefecture administration, the prefectural museum of fine arts ( 佐賀 県 立 美術館 , Saga kenritsu bijutsukan ), a school, sports facilities, but also private residential areas.
