Burgoo

Porridge ("Burgoo")

Burgoo is an English-speaking term from sailing ship times for a coarse oatmeal made from oatmeal boiled in water , seasoned with salt, pepper and sometimes a little butter. The dish was mainly prepared in bad weather, as it required little effort and still provided enough energy for the heavy work on deck. Since the inexpensive Burgoo was served very often on some ships, the term was given a negative connotation for monotonous food among seafarers.
