The castle stone

The Burgstein is a rock about ten meters high in the Ilm valley in Langewiesen ( Thuringia ). It is made of quartz porphyry and has been a geological natural monument since 1939 .

It was created when the Ilm washed out its valley and washed away the surrounding rock with it. During the construction of the Ilmenau – Großbreitenbach railway line in 1881, it was exposed further, as stone was removed from its foot in order to lay the railroad track. The rock comes from the Upper Carboniferous and belongs to the Möhrenbach Formation .

Its name origin is unclear. The Burgstein road in Langewiesen is named after the rock.
