The Berlin-Brandenburg Business Plan Competition (BPW) is Germany's largest regional start-up initiative . The initiative's patrons are the Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises in Berlin and the Minister for Economics and Energy of the State of Brandenburg. The BPW is organized as a transnational initiative jointly by the Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB), the Investitionsbank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB) and the business associations in Berlin and Brandenburg (UVB). The universities in Berlin and Brandenburg are responsible for the initiative. The BPW supports founders in the creation of business concepts and thus promotes successful and sustainable business start-ups in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. The Berlin-Brandenburg business plan competition is jointly supported by the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises of the State of Berlin and the Ministry for Economics and Energy of the State of Brandenburg, as well as funded by the European Social Fund (ESF).

history

The Berlin-Brandenburg business plan competition started in 1995, making it the longest-running regional competition of its kind in Germany. At that time still running under the name “Business Plan Competition Berlin”, the competition had 22 participants in its first round in 1995/96.

The BPW has been officially a competition between the two states of Berlin and Brandenburg since 1998. Since then, participants in the Brandenburg competition have received intensive support from the ILB, which is a sponsor of the BPW. In the 2002 competition, the ILB switched from sponsoring to project management.

Two ways

Participants can choose whether to create and submit their business concept as part of the BPW as a classic business plan (BPW Plan) and / or according to the Business Model Canvas (BPW Canvas) method .

BPW Plan - includes the creation of a business plan in three stages, each with a specific focus.

BPW Canvas - offers the creation of a canvas model in which all company-relevant aspects are dealt with. With the help of nine components, the tool enables business concepts to be visualized quickly.

procedure

The BPW is divided into three levels of competition levels / cycles:

BPW plan

  1. Level: product / service and founding team
  2. Stage: market analysis and marketing
  3. Level: company / organization and financial planning / financing

The content of the seminars and advisory services is tailored to the focus of the respective level. Entry can be made at any time. The requirements for the content and scope of the business plan increase from level to level until the participants have developed a complete business concept from the original idea at the end of the third level.

BPW Canvas

It is possible to submit a canvas model for evaluation in one or more of the three cycles. In all three cycles, all nine components must be worked on and a complete model submitted.

Within the competition, you can switch between the BPW Plan and BPW Canvas methods at any time.

Awards

The best three business plans and the best canvas model are awarded in each of the three competition levels / cycles. Overall, the BPW awards prize money of more than 50,000 euros.

Participation requirements

The company is planned or has been founded in Berlin and Brandenburg. If the company already exists, it was founded no longer than 12 months before the start of the current BPW. If the company is older, either a new business field is established or the company is taken over as part of the successor. The business plan or canvas model was created independently by the team members (no creation by management consultants, etc.).
