Butherich
Butherich (lat. Buthericus ; † 390) was a Roman army master of Gothic descent. His official seat was probably Thessaloniki .
There he was killed in 390 by angry citizens after he ordered the arrest of a popular gay charioteer . In retaliation, Emperor Theodosius I ordered executions. These degenerated into mass killings among the population, which went down in history as the Thessaloniki massacre . Thereupon the emperor was forced to a public penance by Ambrosius , the bishop of his residence city Milan .
