Butokuden

The Butokuden ( Japanese 武 徳 殿 , dt. "Hall of the virtues of war") refers to the oldest practice site of the martial arts in Japan .

After Kammu - tennō had moved his residence to the Heian Palace in Heian-kyō ( Kyōto ) in 794 , he had a training hall built there for the Kondei (then the name for the newly emerging war caste, later samurai ), which he called Butokuden .

In 1899 the Butokukai built a new Butokuden, which served as a training center for a long time. The hall is still in the immediate vicinity of the Heian Shrine in Kyoto, near the Imperial Palace .

In 1970 the Butokuden was declared a national monument.
