The C. Grossmann steel casting GmbH in Solingen-Wald was the oldest steel foundry in Germany.

Company history

In 1853 Conrad Carl Grossmann founded a craft business. In 1911, the flourishing company was converted into a stock corporation, C. Grossmann Eisen- u Stahlwerk AG , which, among other things, produced mining machines and was one of the largest companies in Europe in this area. Due to the decline of German mining and a failed commitment in the Czech Republic, the company had to file for bankruptcy in 1997 , but was realigned and continued under its current name in the same year.

The company today

The company was active in the business fields of steel casting, converter casting, fine-grain steel casting, and low-temperature casting. With two 7.5-ton electric arc furnaces and a converter, it produces over 500 tons of cast products per month, including drive wheels and chain links for surface mining machines, gear housings and brake disks for rail vehicles, as well as defense technology products. Since then Johannes G. Berger has been the company's managing director. The annual turnover in 2005 was 24 million euros, the number of employees was around 170.

A special feature is the steel foundry choir, which has existed in the company for more than 60 years, consisting of employees and external singers.

In January 2016, the company had to file for bankruptcy again. Since no buyer was found, operations had to be stopped.
