Views of the C4ü according to sheet 046

The Palatinate C4ü from 1898 are four-axle compartment cars with side aisles for express trains based on sample sheet 046 from the car registration list from 1913 for the Palatinate network of the Royal Bavarian Railways. The Bavarian State Railways had comparable wagons with the C4ü according to sheet 177 (according to the KBSt.E. car register from 1913).

History / procurement

With the increased number of supra-regional passenger and express trains in the first decade after 1900, the Palatinate Railways also had to grapple with being able to provide appropriate types of wagons for these types of trains. In particular, the wagon compensation agreed with the neighboring railways prompted the Pfalzbahn to also procure wagons for upscale passenger train traffic. As the III. Therefore, a total of 5 cars of this type were discontinued between 1898 and 1900.

commitment

According to the numbering scheme applicable to the Palatinate Railways, this type of car was only procured by the Maximiliansbahn and Ludwigsbahn companies. It can therefore be assumed that they were used in the high-quality express trains of the respective routes. According to the directory of all express and express trains in the Palatinate network of K.Bay.Sts.B. from May 1910 z. B. on the routes of the Palatinate Northern Railway and Maximiliansbahn Bad Münster-Hochspeyer-Neustadt-Weißenburg high-quality express trains such as the D 108 (Dortmund-Cologne-Bad Münster-Basel) or the D 161 (Milan-Basel-Neustadt-Bad-Münster- Holland).

Whereabouts

When the Pfalzbahn was incorporated into the Bavarian State Railroad in 1909, these cars were also taken over. In 1920 the cars came to the Reichsbahn's Bavarian Group Administration and were subordinated to the Ludwigshafen directorate. There they were given the generic identifier C4ü Bay 98 . The further route is not known, as the Reichsbahn did not keep separate data for the former Palatinate wagons.

Constructive features

Underframe

The frame consisted of riveted rolled sections. The outer side rails were U-shaped with outward-facing flanges. As a towing device, the wagons had screw couplings with safety hooks according to VDEV, the drawbar was spring-loaded throughout. The wagons had double-slotted basket buffers with an installation length of 650 mm. The buffer plates had a diameter of 370 mm. These were later partly replaced by case buffers.

drive

The wagons had bogies of Bavarian design with a short wheelbase of 2,500 mm with a frame riveted from sheet metal and angles. The axles were stored in sliding axle bearings. The wheels had spoked wheel bodies and a wheel diameter of 1,014 mm.

Car body

The frame of the car body consisted of wooden studs, planked with wood on the inside and sheet metal on the outside. At both ends of the car there were passages closed by bellows, the entrance doors were retracted. The wagons had a flat barrel roof. The car had a toilet and a side passage at both ends of the car. The first class compartment was in the middle of the car. The lighting consisted of gas incandescent lamps, the associated storage container with a volume of 2,200 liters was located lengthways under the car floor. In the 1920s, the cars were converted to electric lighting.

The heating was done with steam and the ventilation with static fans on the roof.

Furnishing

Two of the eight compartments of the III. Class had sliding side doors to the passage, the other compartments were open to the aisle side. Next to the toilet at the end of the car on the brakes side there was a small service compartment for the driver.
