CD recorder

A CD recorder is a CD player with an audio recorder function to record audio data on CD-R and CD-RW .

CD recorders are sold as stand- alone devices that record audio material like a cassette recorder or a MiniDisc recorder. Almost all CD recorders intended for home use require special audio CD-R (W) s for recording, also sold under the name "CD-R (W) for consumer". These do not differ fundamentally from the usual CD-R (W) and can also be used as such, but have a special identification in the lead-in that is recognized by the CD recorder. GEMA fees are included in the purchase price of the audio CD media , for this reason the devices are blocked for the use of normal CD-R (W), although they would be technically capable of writing them. Some professional CD recorders do not have this limitation.

Most CD recorders (again with the exception of studio equipment) adhere to the Serial Copy Management System , which is why they may not work. You may not be able to make digital 1: 1 copies of CDs or other digital sound carriers that have already been transferred over a digital S / PDIF connection. In such cases, a copy is only possible via an analog connection. In principle, there is a loss of information due to the digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion. Depending on the quality of the converters involved, this loss can be practically inaudible with good modulation . However, there can also be more or less significant losses in fidelity.

In contrast to this, the copy protection mechanisms of CDs, which are based on disregard of the CD standard (“ Un-CD ”), do not lead to any protection through the transfer via the S / PDIF signal.

In the past, the term CD recorder was used synonymously with CD burner . With the availability of audio CD recorders (within the meaning of this article) and the spread of the word “CD burner”, the meaning shifted.
