The vehicles assigned to class 6 with the track numbers 901 and 902 of Cape Government Railways (CGR) were steam locomotives with a tender with the wheel arrangement 1'C1 '( Prairie ).

The two locomotives built by Kitson & Company in 1903 (factory numbers 4191 and 4192) were slightly enlarged versions of the machines with the numbers 270-277 . In particular, the drive wheel diameter was increased from 1,372 to 1,524 mm. The construction of the rear running axle had been changed compared to that of the locomotives 270-273 - it was designed as a Bissel frame - and proved itself in operation. The locomotives No. 901 and 902 were the only 1'C1 'in South Africa that were in service for a long time.

Kitson supplied two 2'C1 'locomotives with the two 1'C1' (serial numbers 4193 and 4194), which were largely identical except for the leading bogie and the resulting greater length. These became known as the Karoo class and later supplemented with other supplies. The 1'C1 type, however, was no longer built; the bogie of the Pacifics led to better running properties.

The SAR took over the 1'C1 'locomotives as class 6Y with the track numbers 711 and 712. They were mainly used in suburban traffic and were retired by 1934. No copy has survived.
