CMSS 3D

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CMSS 3D (Creative MultiSpeaker Surround) is a playback mode for sound by PCs , which makes it possible to generate surround sound from 2 channels or to mix a stereo playback from multi-channel sources, which however still retains the surround sound. CMSS require proprietary drivers and is not supported on Linux. This is particularly noticeable with headphones.

Sound cards that support this playback standard are:

  • Soundblaster X-Fi
  • Soundblaster Audigy 1, 2 and 4 (also via analog outputs)
  • Soundblaster Extigy
  • Soundblaster Live! 24-bit

You can also set this form of surround sound with several speaker sets, as long as you have the required sound card from Creative Labs with the "EAX Console" software, in which you can activate CMSS and CMSS 2. A stereo signal is then extrapolated to all surround speakers and output. CMSS is better suited for music, CMSS2 with additional room sound simulation better for films.
