Cabasset (Italy, late 16th century)

The Cabasset , also known as a pear helmet or rifle hood , is a Spanish-influenced type of helmet that developed from the monkshood or morion in the first half of the 16th century .

description

The high helmet bell of the cabasset was surrounded by a narrow brim and, in some specimens, ended in a backward-curved apex, and it could also have a low crest on its front. It is common with this helmet shape for the comb to end in a spiked tip. The cheek flaps of the helmet were usually pushed in, i.e. composed of several steel plates, and fitted with chin straps. The cabasset was popular among foot soldiers and was in use until the mid- 17th century . It was produced in the simplest form, but also provided with ornate, embossed decorations.
