The Cabildo is a building in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo .

The building, designed in 1804 and then erected from that year until 1869, is located in the Ciudad Vieja on Calle Juan Carlos Gómez, corner of Sarandí at Plaza Matriz . The design for its construction came from the architect Tomás Toribio . Toribio died in the course of the long construction process. His son José Toribio took over the further execution and under his direction the addition of the upper floor on the Calle Sarandí followed . In the years 1957 to 1959, restoration work took place under the direction of the restoration commission consisting of the architects J. Abella Trías, R. Cohe, H. Arredondo and J. Pivel Devoto .

The building originally served as Cabildo Montevideos and served as both a town hall and a royal prison. Until 1925, the seat of the national legislative body was housed here. The Consejo Nacional de Administración and the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry followed suit in using the Cabildo. Since 1959 it has housed the Museo y Archivo Histórico Municipal . The 13 meter high, two-storey building has a floor area of ​​1886 m² and its architecture is an example of colonial neo-classicism.

Since 1975 the building has been classified as the Monumento Histórico Nacional .
