Cahermore (Burren)
The Dun of Cahermore ( Irish An Chathair Mhór , dt. "The big place") is located in the townland of Ballyallaban in the Burren in County Clare in Ireland . The only partially preserved walls of the Great Stone Fort (as the name Cahermore suggests), about 50 m in diameter, are up to 2.8 m thick and in places just as high. They are built from two layers of large well-fitted blocks. However, the lintel over the entrance of the dun and the remains of buildings inside appear to be medieval . The name Cahermore is common in the west of Ireland. Caher is the Anglicized form of the Irish word cathair (which in some regions of the island means Dun or Steinfort).
Outside the entrance there are ruins that belong to a basement . Nearby are the Rath Ballyallaban and the inland Promontory Fort of Cahercommaun .
