The Caisse des Emprunts was a French bank founded in 1674 by French Finance Minister Jean Baptiste Colbert to fund the state. The bank accepted deposits that earned interest and were securitized , representing an early form of paper money in France. As early as 1709 it could no longer hold the deposits of its customers and was closed.
