Caldwell House is a manor house on the southern edge of the Scottish Council Area East Renfrewshire near the village of Uplawmoor . It is isolated on a spacious property in the middle of a small forest. Today it is only in a ruinous condition. In 1971, Caldwell House was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category A.

history

The building was constructed between 1771 and 1773 for MP William Mure, Baron Mure of Caldwell . As architects, Robert and James Adam were responsible for the planning. The property with its numerous outbuildings remained in the family for generations and served as the family headquarters. In 1927 it was abandoned and acquired by the regional health authority. This had Caldwell House converted into a hospital, with numerous conversions and additions added. A nursing home was later housed there, which kept changing the interior. The property was used as a children's home until 1985 and then became private property. The new owners lived in the house for a few years before it became vacant from around 1990. In 1992, the deteriorating structure of the building was pointed out and plans for restoration and renewed use as a care facility were submitted, which, however, were not pursued any further. The owners planned to use the building themselves again and had some repairs carried out. However, due to vandalism and burglary, they gave up the building again. As a result of a fire in 1995, the roof collapsed and the building became partially uninhabitable. Due to the rapidly deteriorating building fabric, the owners were asked to carry out repairs at the beginning of the 2000s, but they did not follow them. Later that decade, the roof was completely demolished. In 2010 it was reported that plants were beginning to grow inside the building. Since 1992 Caldwell House has been listed on the Scottish List of Listed Buildings at Risk. His condition was described as ruinous in 2010.
