Reference books for campsites are generally referred to as camping guides . Depending on the design, they provide information to varying degrees about the essential space features such as B. Access, location, site design, facilities and quality of facilities, leisure facilities and offers, shopping facilities, prices, special features, etc. Most camping guides also contain important country information and a planning map. Some camping guides contain editorial evaluations of the sites or individual groups of characteristics.

Camping guides are used both to select a holiday destination and to plan individual stages of a trip. Part of the information is the results of on-site inspections; in many cases, however, they are also based on information provided by the placeholders or other research. The design of the description of campsites can be chargeable for the operator.

Publication in print is common. The information (sometimes shortened) can usually also be accessed from the Internet and / or is offered as an app for mobile devices.

Several publishers of camping guides sell discount cards with different levels of acceptance (depending on the provider, from some 100 to well over a thousand participating campsites in Europe), which can be used primarily in the off-season, as a free supplement or at an additional cost .

All publishers must make a selection to limit the scope of the camping guides. It is not uncommon for campsites to remain unlisted, despite the fact that some of them are also very attractive. A comparison on site is often worthwhile here. Numerous regional tourism associations, tourist offices and associations of campsite operators also publish brochures - often free of charge - which make key statements about the campsites considered.

In addition, numerous private and commercial compilations of campsite information can be found on the Internet in campsite portals and forums of very different depth, quality and topicality, which in many cases also enable interactive assessments by campers.

The first camping guides appeared in Germany in the early 1950s.
