Campoo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Campoo refers to a comarca (district) in the south of the Spanish region of Cantabria , whose administration is located in the city of Reinosa . The name also stands for a landscape, the extent of which extends beyond the borders of the district and into the country of Castile-Leon . In terms of landscape, it is a plateau surrounded by mountains, with the western mountain region again being referred to as Alto Campoo (high campoo).

The river Ebro has its source in this region and flows a few kilometers after its source through one of the three reservoirs in its course. Settlements are mainly around the reservoirs used to generate electricity and the town of Reinosa . Large parts of the landscape are uninhabited and are considered a biosphere reserve , with a part of the mountain range being a ski area. The region is a retreat for rare animal species and around 25 brown bears .
