Canaliculitis
Canaliculitis generally refers to the inflammation of a tubule. The term is mostly used for inflammation of the lacrimal tubules ( canaliculitis lacrimalis ) in the eye, which is usually caused by bacteria and mainly affects people over the age of 50.
causes
Canaliculitis is usually a bacterial infection, v. a. with the gram-positive Actinomyces israelii . But fungal or viral infections are also possible causes. Obstructions and foreign bodies enable the pathogens to multiply and are therefore to be seen as risk factors.
Symptoms
Typical signs of inflammation of the tear ducts are the swollen, red point at which they come to the surface of the body. The affected eye is also usually chronically reddened and has an epiphora . Often there is also a watery to brown discharge.
Diagnosis and treatment
The diagnosis is only made after exclusion u. a. chronic conjunctivitis or, less commonly, cancers of the lacrimal tubules. A laboratory test can also provide information about the pathogen so that superficial antibiotics can be applied in a targeted manner. Surgical intervention is only necessary in the case of obstruction or other organic factors favoring bacterial growth.
