Cancellans

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cancellans ( lat . Pl. Cancellantia , dt . Exchange sheet , partly Auswechselblatt , replacement sheet , transfer printing ; engl . Cancel leaf ) is the book scientific term for a swapped page in a book. The exchange is carried out by the manufacturer of the book prior to publication due to typographical errors or errors in content. The leaf to be exchanged is called Cancellandum , or more rarely Cancellatum , the exchanged leaf. Even the smallest mistakes such as punctuation errors can motivate the exchange. If the exchange does not take place for the entire edition, set-different variants of prints may arise.

With a single- sheet cardboard box, a single sheet to be replaced is cut off to the edge of the sentence. The newly set and printed page is glued to the remaining strip.

Double-sheet cardboard boxes are hardly recognizable because a complete replacement sheet is not glued, but bound.

The relatively complex procedure was widespread until the end of the 18th century and was replaced by the Corrigenda or Errata , a simple sheet attached with a list of changes or deletions. Today an exchange is only carried out in exceptional cases.
