Cantharis rustica is a beetle fromthe soft beetle family (Cantharidae).
features
The beetles are 10 to 13.5 millimeters long. They have blackish-gray elytra that are covered with fine hair. On her red neck shield is a black spot in the middle. The basal section of the femora is colored red. The rest of the legs are dark gray. The first 2-3 antenna segments are red, while the rest of the antennae are black-gray. The upper side of the abdomen is colored orange, with the exception of the dark front central area.
distribution
Cantharis rustica is widespread in Europe. The distribution area of the beetle species includes the British Isles as well as Fennoscandinavia and the Baltic States in the north .
Way of life
The beetles can be found on the edges of forests, on meadows and on dry grassland. They fly from late April to August. Larvae and adults of Cantharis rustica predatory on various insects. But they also eat plant-based foods.
