Caradog ap Iestyn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caradog ap Iestyn († before 1147) was the first Welsh Lord of Afan .

Life

Caradog was a son of Iestyn ap Gwrgan , the last king of the southern Welsh kingdom of Morgannwg . Towards the end of the 11th century, South Wales was conquered by the Normans , although the exact course of the conquest is unclear. Despite the Norman conquest, after the death of his father in 1093, Caradog ap Iestyn was able to retain rulership under Norman suzerainty over Afan, the mountainous region between the River Taff in the east and the River Neath in the west, while except for the small section between River Neath and River Afan the coastal area fell under Norman rule and the rule was Glamorgan . As the first Lord of Afan, Caradog is said to have built Aberafan Castle at the mouth of the River Afan , from whose surrounding settlement the city of Aberavon developed. In 1127 there was a violent argument between him and his brothers Gruffydd and Goronwy, about which nothing more is known.

Family and offspring

Caradog ap Iestyn had married Gwladus, a daughter of Prince Rhys ap Tewdwr von Deheubarth . He had four sons:

After his death Morgan, Maredudd and Cadwallon divided his rule among themselves and founded the dominions Afan, Glynrhondda and Meisgyn . Afan remained under his descendants the last rule, which remained under the rule of a Welsh dynasty until the second half of the 14th century after the final English conquest of Wales .
