In soil science, carbonation refers to the formation and accumulation of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) in the soil .
The precipitated lime can be finely divided, but is often also concentrated in bands or crusts. Reasons for the precipitation can be:
Water evaporation with the consequence of CaCO 3 -saturation, especially in arid areas,
CO 2 loss and the resulting increase in CO 3 2− concentration,
Alkalization and the resulting increase in the CO 3 2− concentration.
