Cardo (insect)

The Cardo ( lat. "Pivot hinge") is the basal Angel piece of the maxilla of the insects and thus belongs to the mouth parts . Together with the stipes , it forms the transformed coxopodite of the maxilla.

The cardo is the only element of the maxilla that is connected to the head and attaches below the mouth opening, on the hypostoma .
