Carlos Raúl Villanueva
Carlos Raúl Villanueva (born May 30, 1900 in London , † August 16, 1975 in Caracas ) was the most prominent Venezuelan architect of the 20th century and an important representative of modern architecture . He was instrumental in the development and modernization of Caracas, Maracay and other cities in Venezuela. His most important works include the El Silencio Redevelopment with 7797 apartments and 207 shops, the Museum of Fine Arts (Caracas, 1935–1938), the Jesús Soto Museum (Ciudad Bolívar, 1970), and the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas (1944–1970 ), the main campus of the University of Venezuela , considered a masterpiece of modern urban planning, architecture and art. The campus was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000 .
