A Carmen neckline is a low- slung , often flounced neckline in women's clothing that leaves the shoulders free. The Carmen section is named after the main character of the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet , the gypsy Carmen. This type of clothing goes back to traditional Andalusian costumes ( flamenco dress), which are also known as Carmen blouses or Carmen dress. In Germany, this section became part of folklore fashion in the late 1970s . The same design can sometimes also be found in dirndl blouses in the so-called country house fashion , which were actually historically high-necked.

Models with a breast-covering flounce are fashionably combined with tight jeans or long flounced skirts, and the waist is emphasized with a corset .
