Carmen graecum de herbis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The carmen graecum de herbis ( Greek poem about plants ) is a Greek didactic poem about botany . It consists of 215 hexameters , is written in the Ionian dialect and probably dates from the 3rd century AD, as metric studies have shown. Since the author is unknown, the work is cited as Anonymi carmen graecum de herbis ("Greek poem about plants by an anonymous person"). It has survived in the richly illustrated Viennese manuscript of Dioscorides from the 6th century and was first published by Julius Sillig (in the appendix to his edition: De viribus herbarum una cum Walafridi Strabonis, Othonis Cremonensis et Joannis Folcz carminibus similis argumenti , Leipzig 1832).
