Hans Rudolf Guggisberg
Hans Rudolf Guggisberg (born July 26, 1930 in Berlin-Charlottenburg , † January 12, 1996 in Basel ) was a Swiss historian .
The son of an engineer graduated from high school in Biel in 1949 . From 1949 to 1956 he studied history and English and German philology at the Universities of Basel and Amsterdam . In 1956 he did his doctorate with Werner Kaegi in Basel on Sebastian Castellio in the judgment of his posterity from late humanism to the Enlightenment . From 1957 to 1960 he worked as a high school teacher in Biel. The habilitation took place in 1963 with the thesis The European Middle Ages in American historical thought of the 19th and early 20th centuries . He then taught in Basel and spent guest semesters at Columbia University and the University of Cologne . In 1967 he became professor of European history at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute in Berlin. In 1968/69 he was appointed to the University of Basel, where he taught as Professor of Modern General and Swiss History until his retirement in 1995.
His main research interests were the history of the USA, Switzerland and Spain. His work History of the USA became a standard work. Guggisberg presented a comprehensive biography of Sebastian Castellio . His research on Castellio also led to a series of studies on humanism , on Jacob Burckhardt and Johan Huizinga . In numerous studies, Guggisberg discussed the fate of the Swiss in the USA, and conversely, he also researched the impressions of Americans such as George Licoln Burr or Martha Carey Thomas in Switzerland. For fourteen years he was editor of the journal Archiv für Reformationsgeschichte .
