Andreas Staehelin

Andreas Staehelin (born November 20, 1926 in Zurich ; † November 20, 2002 in Basel ; reformed ; resident in Basel) was a Swiss historian .

life and work

Andreas Staehelin, son of the psychiatrist John Eugen Staehelin , studied history and German literature from 1945–1951. During this time he joined the Swiss Zofinger Association . In 1951 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Peter Ochs . After several years of academic activity, archival internships in Munich and Paris and an assistant at the Basel University Library, he became an adjunct at the Basel-Stadt State Archives in 1961 . In the same year he completed his habilitation for Swiss history at the University of Basel. 1967–1991 he was state archivist for the canton of Basel-Stadt . In 1970 he also became an associate professor at the University of Basel. 1970–1973 he was head of the Historical and Antiquarian Society in Basel; 1978–1983 he presided over the General History Research Society of Switzerland. 1973–1991 he was the biennial editor of the Basler Zeitschrift für Geschichte und Altertumskunde .

Andreas Staehelin was married to the English language specialist and high school teacher Adelheid Wackernagel, a daughter of Hans Georg Wackernagel .
