John E. Staehelin

John Eugen Staehelin-Iselin (born June 3, 1891 in Basel ; † May 16, 1969 there ; entitled to live in Basel) was a Swiss psychiatrist .

Life

The son of the silk manufacturer Benedict Staehelin studied medicine with a focus on psychiatry at the Universities of Basel and Munich . He did his doctorate in 1918 under Gustav Wolff and then worked as an assistant at Burghölzli . In the summer semester of 1926 he received his habilitation at the University of Zurich and in 1927 he was appointed first senior physician and head of the University Psychiatric Clinic. From the summer semester of 1929 he was full professor of psychiatry at the University of Basel and director of the cantonal sanatorium and nursing home Friedmatt . In 1935/36 Staehlin was dean of the medical faculty and in 1948 rector of the University of Basel. He retired in the winter semester of 1959.

John Staehelin was married to Elisabeth born in 1921. Iselin and had several children, including the lawyer and general secretary of Swissair Bernhard Staehelin (1923-2010) and the historian and state archivist Andreas Staehelin (1926-2002).
