Casa Romuli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Casa Romuli ( lat. "House of Romulus ") was a building in ancient Rome .

The Casa Romuli was a simple thatched hut on the southwest side of the Palatine Hill , near the top of the stairs called Scalae Caci , which led up from the Forum Boarium .

The hut was viewed by the Romans as the authentic dwelling of the deified city founder Romulus and was worshiped accordingly. The ancient writers Dionysius of Halicarnassus and Cassius Dio described the location of the building and reported that every time the hut was damaged by fire or similar influences, it was restored with original simplicity and without the addition of decorations. The Casa Romuli survived until the third century AD.

At the place handed down by ancient authors, the post holes of an archaic shepherd's hut from the early days of settlement on the Palatine were found in the ground during excavations in 1872. These holes are now commonly identified by historians as the remains of Casa Romuli.
