Andrea Carandini (born November 3, 1937 in Rome ) is an Italian classical archaeologist .

Andrea Carandini, son of the Italian ambassador and politician Nicolò Carandini , studied classical archeology at the University of La Sapienza in Rome by Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli , of him in 1962 for a work on the mosaics of the Villa of Piazza Armerina doctorate . This was followed by years as a research assistant and lecturer at La Sapienza and the University of Siena , where he also taught as an associate professor from 1980 to 1983. In 1984 the University of Pisa appointed him to the chair of Classical Archeology and Ancient Art History, which he held until 1992. In that year he was appointed to the corresponding chair at La Sapienza. At the same time he taught methodology and excavation technology at the University's Scuola di Specializzazione di Archeologia . He was retired in 2010.

In 2006 Carandini received the gold medal of the State of Italy for services to school, culture and art (medaglia ai benemeriti della scuola, della cultura e dell'arte). From 2009 to 2011 he was President of the Consiglio superiore dei beni culturali , and since 2013 he has been President of the Fondo Ambiente Italiano .

Andrea Carandini has been an active excavator throughout his career . His investigations in the villa in Piazza Armerina, which he carried out with interruptions from 1964 to 1982, were important. In addition to excavations in the Terme del Nuotatore Ostia in Ostia Antica , Volterra , Veji and Pompeii , his excavations at the Villa of Settefinestre were of outstanding importance. In addition, important excavations were carried out in Rome from 1985 onwards, which looked at the slopes of the Palatine and provided important insights into the localization of the earliest structures in Rome from the royal era and the Roma quadrata . He has passed on his extensive experience in excavation in teaching and numerous publications. Other focal points of his scientific work were the production conditions in Roman agriculture , the importance of the slave system for the management of Roman country villas and latifundia .
