Cashelor Fort
Cashelor Fort is located on a small hill outside the village of Ballintogher, south of Lough Gill in County Sligo , Ireland . The name is derived from the Irish Caiseal Óir , which can be translated as "golden fort".
The oval, west-east oriented dun has a diameter of 23 by 16 m with a 3 m thick wall, which is unusually high at 2.4 m. Parts of the wall base protrude because of the steepness of the hill to stabilize the wall. The 1.2 m wide entrance is on the northeast side and is partially blocked by fallen stones. A ramp appears to lead up to the entrance from a slightly elevated area. Two large stone slabs lie in the middle of the interior.
A report from 1891 speaks of a basement in the wall that apparently led to the bottom of the hill and to a room with a number of skeletons outside the cashel.
