Castrén monument

The Castrén Monument is a memorial in memory of the Finnish ethnologist and philologist Matthias Alexander Castrén in Helsinki , Finland .

location

The monument is on the north side of Aurorankatu Street in downtown Helsinki. A little further north is the Finnish National Museum .

Design and history

The Castrén monument was created by the sculptor Alpo Sailo and erected in 1921. It shows a bronze bust depicting Castrén on a tall, narrow base .

The name MA Castrén is inscribed on the base and below it is a short text in Finnish :

suomen kansa
suomen suvun
tutkimuksen
perustajalle

Translated into German , the text means something like: Finnish people, Finnish family, founder of research .
