The Cathedral Square is the central point of the New Zealand city Christchurch . In addition to ChristChurch Cathedral, it is home to the tourist center and in the immediate vicinity all important shops and a large gastronomic and cultural offer. Much of Cathedral Square was destroyed during the Christchurch earthquake on February 22, 2011, and the cathedral was also badly damaged.

Attractions

The centerpiece is the ChristChurch Cathedral , it is one of the most important places of worship in the country and the symbol of the city. The cathedral had a height of 63 m to the top. The tower was demolished immediately after the earthquake; At the beginning of 2016 it was still not decided what to do with the church. Next to the church there is a chalice , also known as the “Millennium Cone”, a large conical sculpture which symbolizes 42 leaves of native plants. The modern structure was designed by the New Zealand artist Neil Dawson . Another highlight and additional tourist magnet is The Wizard . The magician appears every day at lunchtime in front of the cathedral to present his performance.
