Causa materialis
The Causa materialis (also: material cause, material cause) belongs to the internal causes according to Aristotle . It lies in the material (Greek hyle ), "from which something arises and what is in this something, e.g. the bronze is the cause of the statue".
According to Aristotle, there are four causes in total . The three other (additional) causes are:
- causa formalis ( formal cause)
- causa efficiens (effective cause)
- causa finalis (final cause)
