The Cavling Prize ( Danish : Cavlingprisen ) is the most prestigious award in Danish journalism . The prize was donated on December 18, 1944 by the Danish Association of Journalists ( Journalistforbundet ) to mark its 40th anniversary. The award commemorates the founder of the journalists' association Henrik Cavling (1858–1933).

The Cavling Prize is awarded annually to a journalist or a group of journalists who have shown particular initiative and talent in the journalistic field in the previous year ( "der i særlig grad har udvist initiativ og talent i det foregående år" ). The award is endowed with 25,000 Danish kroner . The winners will also receive a statuette by Henrik Cavling created by the sculptor Jørgen Rode . The decision on the award is made by a committee that is elected for a period of three years from a group of candidates from the journalists' association. The award ceremony takes place in January each year.
