Cawthron Records

Cawthron Records was an American music label that existed around 1959/1960.

The Cawthron label was owned by the meat inspector Dunlap J. Cawthron. This operated the Allegro Recording and Music Studio in Los Angeles , which existed from 1955 to around 1965. On his first label, Cawthron , he began to release records on a part-time basis around 1959. These were sold by Bingo Records, owned by the DJ Jim Specs Hawthorne and there singles a.o. 1959/60. a. by the singer Troy Cori or the Ponsi Sisters , a teenage vocal group.

In 1959, according to Billboard, the first single on Cawthron Records , Shirley Agnew, was released with Christmas Is The Best Time / Looking Ahead to Happiness (Cawthron 501). This was followed by recordings by the gospel group The Spirit of St. Louis , Herman McFadden, the Usher's Mass Chorus Of St. Louis and the Sam Lazar Trio with guitarist Grant Green ( Space Flight , Cawthron 507). Cawthron then continued its activities as a music producer with the labels C&C and Allegro Records . From 1960 on Allegro released rhythm and blues and gospel recordings by Claude McLin , Zena Ayo , The Perry Trio, Vermya Phillips , Kathryn Adams and CC Griffin.
