Cell of Origin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cell of Origin ( COO ; German  origin cell ) is a method of mobile position determination (localization). With the help of a GSM network, it determines where a mobile device and its users are located. The COO provides the geographic coordinates of the radio cell in which the user's device has logged into. The accuracy depends on the size and shape of the radio cells. The smaller the radio cells, the more precise the position determined. A position accuracy of approx. 300 m is possible in the urban area. Itcan be improved by an order of magnitude bydetermining the signal propagation time .

The Cell-ID method is also used by the Björn Steiger Foundation for cell phone emergency location.
