Cercle (theater)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Austrian usage, the cercle is an expensive seating category in a theater or concert hall that includes the first rows in front of the stage .

The seats in the Cercle are not always available for sale, which can be for various reasons. In some theaters it is possible to enlarge the stage by raising a lifting platform in this area or to create an orchestra pit by lowering this platform . Likewise, events on the stage can be dangerous or uncomfortable for the audience when viewed from the Cercle . Often the cercle places are included in the production and must therefore be kept free. The Burgtheater in Vienna, for example, has four different seating plans, depending on how many rows of the Cercles are available to the audience. By blocking individual rows or the entire cercle, the front stage can be enlarged by up to 50 m².
