Part III of the Mathematical Tripo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The grades of part II and III of the "Mathematical Tripos" are announced publicly in the University of Cambridge and thrown from the balcony.

Part III is the name for the final year of the Mathematical Tripo at the University of Cambridge , and at the same time an independent postgraduate course for internationally selected students. Around half of the selected participants are from the UK and the remainder from abroad. The course is equivalent to a one-year master’s degree, although it can be better described as an excellent and very challenging one-year preparation for a scientific career in theoretical physics and applied mathematics. It used to be known as the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Mathematics (abbreviated to CASM).

The course lasts one year and is divided into three eight-week trimesters. A large selection of lectures on applied and pure mathematics and theoretical physics is offered. The third trimester is primarily intended for exams and repetition of the lecture content of the first two trimesters.

In addition to the final exams, participants also have the opportunity to complete part of the examination in an essay.

Part III is a graduate recruitment program for Cambridge's DAMTP (Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics). Part III graduates are highly sought after as doctoral candidates at many universities in the UK and the US .

Since October 2010, successful graduates of the course have been awarded a master's degree. Students who have already obtained a Bachelor's degree from Cambridge University receive a “Master of Mathematics”, external candidates (who were only enrolled for the final year of Part III) receive a “Master of Advanced Study” (MASt) for the same examination. .

Graduates of previous years who have acquired a CASM can also be granted the respective academic degree retrospectively upon application and if further requirements are met.
