Cetratus (weapon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cetratus was a Roman shield .

Description and use

The Certratus was a light Roman shield. It was made of wood that was covered with leather . Compared to the scutum , it consisted of only one layer of wood, which meant that it did not offer such high protection against knocks and bumps. The Cetratus was cheaper to produce than other Roman shields, which is why it was affordable even for financially weak mercenaries.

This shield was mainly used by Roman auxiliary troops ( auxiliary troops ), but also by gladiators who fought in the Roman arenas.
