Chanhu Daro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chanhu Daro is a ruin site in what is now Pakistan , near Sakrand . It is the remains of a city of the Indus culture (approx. 2500–1900 BC). The site was excavated by an American team from 1935 to 1936.

The place today consists of three hills, which in ancient times probably represented a hill. Three settlement phases could be distinguished during the excavations. The first, which was subdivided into a, b and c by the excavators, belongs to the actual Indus culture, the second to the Jhukar culture and the third to the Jhangar culture .

The city was built on a plan with streets intersecting at right angles. There were numerous pieces of evidence for craft businesses and the remains of a monumental platform.

The jhukar and jhangar layers show that the city became impoverished during this period. Some of the old residential buildings continued to be used and rebuilt, but there is also evidence that the poorer sections of the population lived in simple mat huts. The seals of this time are of a simple quality. After 900 BC The city was given up.
