Chanson de Guillaume

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chanson de Guillaume , German also Wilhelmslied , is an old French epic ( Chanson de geste ). It is the core epic and the oldest text from the epic cycle about the hero Guillaume d'Orange, who goes back to William of Aquitaine . This cycle was created towards the beginning of the 12th century , but was not rediscovered until 1903 .

At the center of this epic are Guillaume d'Orange and his nephew Vivien. Women also have a comparatively large role in this epic.

In the epicycle about Guillaume d'Orange, lignage (family, ancestors, ancestry) is the structuring criterion. Some of the epics go back to Guillaume's great-grandfather Garin de Monglane .
