Charlotte Stuart , later named Duchess of Albany by her father (October 29, 1753 to November 17, 1789) was the illegitimate daughter of the Jacobite aspirant to the throne, Karl Eduard Stuart, better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie .

Her mother was Clementina Walkinshaw , the aspirant's mistress from 1752 to 1760. After years of abuse, she left Charlie and took her daughter with her. Charlotte spent most of her childhood in convent schools.

Due to her illegitimate birth being unable to marry herself, she chose Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan , Archbishop of Bordeaux, as her lover.

In 1784 her father legitimized her and raised her to the rank of duchess. As a result, she became her father's carer and left her own children, who grew up in the care of her grandmother in Freiburg, Switzerland .

These three children were:

  • Marie Victoire Adelaide (* 1779)
  • Charlotte Maximilienne Amélie (* 1780)
  • Charles Edward Stuart (* 1784; † 1854) called himself by the family name Roehenstart
