Cheirotonia

Cheirotonie or cheirotonia ( ancient Greek χειροτονέω cheirotonéo , stretching out your hands) denotes the public, non-secret ballot by arm or hand signal in the early democratic Greek póleis in the context of a popular assembly .

Cheirotonia also refers to the laying on of hands in the Orthodox Churches during the ordination of bishops , priests and deacons in contrast to the laying on of hands during the appointment of a lecturer and hypodiacon , this is called chirotesia .
